أَلَم يَأَتيكَ وَالأَنباءُ تَسري

أَلَم يَأَتيكَ وَالأَنباءُ تَسري

بِما لاقَيتُ في يَومِ الزِيالِ

بِما لاقَيتُ في يَومِ الزِيالِ

Has word not reached you, as tidings travel,

Did not the news come to you, spreading,

of what I faced on the day of parting?

Of what I faced on the day of parting?

وَلَمّا أَن تَزايَلَ مُقرِفوهُم

وَلَمّا أَن تَزايَلَ مُقرِفوهُم

عَصَينا القَومَ بِالأَسَلِ النِهالِ

عَصَينا القَومَ بِالأَسَلِ النِهالِ

And when their men of mixed parentage scattered,

When their riders began departing,

we defied the foe with spears that had drunk their fill.

We assaulted the people with slender spears.

وَعُرِّيَتِ الفُيولُ مِنِ الثَواني

وَعُرِّيَتِ الفُيولُ مِنِ الثَواني

وَعُطِّلَتِ الخُيولُ مِنَ الرِحالِ

وَعُطِّلَتِ الخُيولُ مِنَ الرِحالِ

And the elephants were stripped of their harnesses,

The sheaths were emptied of the swords,

and the horses were deprived of their saddles.

And the horses were relieved of the saddles.

وَلَولا ذَبُّنا عَمَّن يَلينا

وَلَولا ذَبُّنا عَمَّن يَلينا

لِلَجَّ الجَمعُ في فِعلِ الضَلالِ

لِلَجَّ الجَمعُ في فِعلِ الضَلالِ

And were it not for our defense of those beside us,

Had we not protected those behind us,

the host would surely have persisted in acts of folly.

The group would have slipped into error.

حَمَينا يَومَ أَرماثٍ حِمانا

حَمَينا يَومَ أَرماثٍ حِمانا

وَبَعضَ القَومِ أَولى بِالجمالِ

وَبَعضَ القَومِ أَولى بِالجمالِ

We defended our domain on the day of Armath,

On the day of Armath we protected in earnest,

and some of the men are better suited to camels.

And some of the people deserved beauty.
