وَسائِلand ask زَرنجاًZaranj هَلwhether كَبَّlaid low جَمعاًa host
لماwhen لَقِيَتit encountered صِقاعاًa clash مِنamong صِقاعِclashes
And ask Zaranj whether a host was laid low
And to Zarnuj did my raiders march, gathering a great host,
When it encountered a clash among clashes.
When they met a difficult region of rugged peaks.
لَقَدindeed عَجِبتُI was amazed زرنَجُZaranj إِذwhen رَأَونيthey saw me
شَعَبتُI scattered القَومَthe host مِنfrom سُنَنِthe paths الصِداعِcombat
I was indeed amazed, O Zaranj, when they saw me
Zarnuj were amazed when they saw me
Scattering the host from the paths of combat
Routing the people with relentless headache-dealing blows.

وَيَهتِكُand tears apart وَقعُهاtheir impact زيمَpieces القِناعِthe helmet
With bright swords that leave limbs severed,
With white swords that lop off limbs,
And whose blows tear the helmet's parts apart.
Whose slamming blows pierce even mail-coats.
وَقَوميand my people يَعلَمونَknow فَسائِلوهُمso ask them
بِناabout us أَيّامَthe days نَلمَحُwe flash بِالقِراعِin combat
And my people know, so ask them
Ask my people, they know, ask them
About us, on the days we flash in combat:
About the days when we clashed in combat.
بأَناthat we لاnot نَلوذُseek refuge مِنَfrom الأَعاديthe enemies
وَنُنزِلُand we bring down بِالفَضاءِin open country وَبِالجِراعِand on sandy ground
That we do not seek refuge from the enemies,
That we do not flee from foes,
And we bring them down in open country and on sandy ground.
But fight them openly on the plain or in ravines.
وَيَحمِلُنيand carries me إِلىto الهَيجاءِbattle عَبلٌsturdy
سَبوحٌswift-gliding مِثلُlike مُرتَجِfluttering القِلاعِthe sails
And a sturdy steed carries me into battle,
My swift camel carries me into the fray,
A swift swimmer, like a vessel with fluttering sails.
Bounding like a startled oryx frightened from its lair.
ينفُرُنيdrives me forth إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle غِبتُI was absent عَنهُمfrom them
وَيَلحَقُنيand catches up with me وَإِنand even if كَرِهواthey hated مَصاعيmy fighting
It drives me forth whenever I am away from them,
It chases after me if I leave it behind,
And catches up with me, even if they hate my fighting.
And follows me even if they dislike my course.
وَنَقتُلُand we kill فيهِمamong them قَعصاًoutright وَصَبراًand after capture
وَماand not فِعليmy deed هُناكَthere بِمُستَطاعِachievable
And we kill among them outright and after capture,
And we kill among them both the slow and the hasty,
And what I do there cannot be matched.
Though I had no might to achieve anything there.
دَلَفتُI advanced لَهُمagainst them بِماwith what جَنَبواthey avoided وَلَكِنَّand yet
لَقواthey met حَرباًa war كَساطِعَةِlike a blaze البِقاعِthe lands
I advanced upon them with what they had avoided, and yet
I came to them with peace, but they
They met a war like a blaze across the lands.
Met me with a war bright as the shining plains.
بَعَثتُI sent بِنَهيهِمwith orders for them to desist وَالقَومُand the people فيهاin it
شُهودُwitnesses بَينَbetween خِزيٍdisgrace وَاِختِضاعِand submission
I sent word bidding them desist, while the people in it
I sent them warning but the people in their folly
Were witnesses, between disgrace and submission.
Witnessed shame and bowed heads.
