أَلا هَل أَتاها أَنَّ دَجلَةَ ذَلَّلَت

عَلى ساعةٍ فيها القُلوبُ تُقَلَّبُ

عَلى ساعةٍ فيها القُلوبُ تُقَلَّبُ

Ah, has word reached her that the Tigris was subdued

Has she not learned that Tigris once subsided

at an hour when hearts were tossed about?

In an hour when hearts toss about restlessly?

تَراها عَلَيهِ حينَ حَبَّ حُبابُها

تَراها عَلَيهِ حينَ حَبَّ حُبابُها

تَبارى إِذا جاشَت بِمَوجٍ تَضَرَّبُ

تَبارى إِذا جاشَت بِمَوجٍ تَضَرَّبُ

You see it upon him when its foam rises,

You see it overflowing when she loves her banks

racing as it surges with crashing waves.

Rushing with waves colliding and breaking over each other

نَعَينا بِها كِسرى عَن الدارِ فَاِنثوى

Through it we proclaimed Khosrow's doom; he withdrew from his abode,

We lament for her Kisra's home abandoned

to the remotest place the feeble lookout could report.

To ruins where death keeps watch implacably
