Your love has grown old, Umm al-Jalal,

and your arrows have missed at the archery contest.

Your clinging to me lasted an age,

then the rope's strands frayed after union.

And the heart was enamored of her,

but today it has grown free of that love.

It sobered, neither doing harm nor acting unjustly,

but let its love subside with grace.

You have tamed all our dispositions,

and we have tamed yours in every circumstance.

Yet you have worn us out in our dealings,

imposing on me every grievous task.

You even command me to break with a friend,

though that friend bore us no ill will,

and to do what I had shunned

as a boy, and rebuked my men for doing.

Shall I take it up today, after

gray hair has covered the very back of my head?

By your father's life, you have indeed thought me

weak in strength, or formidable in guile.

Come, ask for a gift, and see

whether I deny you bounty when you ask.

Did you not know that I am of deep-rooted stock—

my paternal and maternal uncles raised me to glory—

and that whenever a dwelling displeases me,

I resolve and swiftly take my leave of it?

So temper your reproaches; do not ruin yourself,

for there is no good in that for you or me.

Then, when her foul speech became plain to me,

I greeted her one morning with three swift divorces—

three that together sent her away,

and let her go with a home and wealth,

    وَما مَسَّها عِندَنا مِن نَكالِ

    to her kin, not made to pay for her release;

and no punishment touched her while she was with us.

So by evening she moaned like nursing camels,

in anguish after one who does not care.

So moan your moans, and know for certain

that we have cast you off to the left,

and that there is no return—do not deny it—

as long as old she-camels moan for their weanlings.

And do not think that I regret it—

No indeed, by our Creator, possessor of majesty!
