وَبَينَماAnd while المَرءُthe man أَمسَyesterday ناعِماًat ease جَذِلاًjoyful

And while a man was only yesterday at ease and full of joy,
among his family, delighted with life and fond of its pleasures,
غِرّاًunaware أُتيحَbefell لَهُhim مِنfrom حَينِهِhis appointed end عَرَضٌan event
فَماso he did not تَلَبَّثَlinger حَتّىuntil ماتَhe died كَالصَعِقِas if struck down
unaware, an event from his appointed end befell him;
he scarcely lingered before he died, as if struck down.
ثُمَّتَthen أَضحىhe became ضُحىًby morning مِنafter غِبِّthe passing of ثالِثَةٍa third day
مُقَنَّعاًshrouded غَيرَwithout ذيpossessing روحٍspirit وَلاnor رَمَقِa trace of life
Then, by the morning of the third day, he lay
shrouded, with neither spirit nor a trace of life.

They weep for him and bring him to a dark pit
whose sides are heaped with earth and clods.
فَماso he did not تَزَوَّدَtake as provision مِمّاfrom what كانَhe had يَجمَعُهُbeen gathering

Of all he used to gather, he took no provision
except burial perfume and the cloths that covered him,
وَغَيرَand besides نَفحَةِa waft of أَعوادٍwooden sticks تُشَبُّkindled لَهُfor him

and a waft from sticks kindled for him;
how little provision that is for one departing.
أَستَغفِرُI ask forgiveness of اللَهَGod أَعماليmy deeds الَّتيwhich سَلَفَتhave passed
مِنfor عَثرَةٍa misstep إِنif يُعاقِبنيHe punishes me بِهاfor it أَبِقِI flee
I ask God to forgive my past deeds
and my missteps; if He punishes me for them, I flee.

In whichever land his death is destined,
if he does not go toward it willingly, he is driven there.
