وَماand what يُدريكِmakes you know ماwhat فَرَسٌa horse جَرورٌstubborn; hard to lead
وَماand what يُدريكِmakes you know ماwhat حَملُbearing السِلاحِarms
And what do you know of a stubborn horse?
And what do you know of bearing arms?
وَماand what يُدريكِmakes you know ماwhat شَيخٌan old man كَبيرٌadvanced in years
عَداهُhas turned him away الدَهرُtime عَنfrom سَنَنِthe path المِراحِof merriment
And what do you know of an aged man
Whom time has turned from the path of merriment?
فَأُقسِمُso I swear لَوif رَكِبتُI rode الوَردَthe bay horse يَوماًfor a day
وَلَيلَتَهُand its night إِلىuntil وَضَحِthe brightness الصَباحِof morning
So I swear, had I ridden the bay for a day
And its night, until the brightness of morning,
إِذاًthen لَنَطَرتُI would surely have looked (probably لَنَظَرتُ) مِنكِof you إِلىat مَكانٍa place
كَسَحقِlike the worn remnant البُردِof the mantle أَوor أَثَرِthe mark الجِراحِof wounds
Then I would surely have [looked] at a place on you
Like a threadbare mantle or the marks of wounds.
مَرَرتُI passed بِنِسوَةٍby women مُتَعَطِّراتٍwearing perfume
كَضَوءِlike the light الصُبحِof dawn أَوor بَيضِeggs الأَداحيof ostrich nests
I passed by women wearing perfume,
Like dawn’s light or eggs in ostrich nests,
عَلىon شُقرِthe chestnut-colored البِغالِmules فَصِدقَso they captured (probably فَصِدْنَ; supplied reading unclear) قَلبيmy heart
بِحُسنِwith the beauty الدَلِّof coquetry وَالحَدَقِand the eyes المِلاحِbeautiful
On chestnut mules; [they captured] my heart
With their lovely coquetry and beautiful eyes.
فَقُلتُso I said مَنِwho الظِباءُthe gazelles فَقُلنَand they said سِربٌa herd
بَداhas appeared لَكَto you مِنfrom ظِباءِthe gazelles of بَنيthe sons of رِياحِRiyah
So I asked, “Who are these gazelles?” They said, “A herd
Of Banu Riyah’s gazelles has appeared before you.”
