If one day my brother withdraws his affection,

and I find unfamiliar in him some of what I once knew,

I turn toward him with affection, for I

turn with kindness toward a brother who turns away.

And though he withdraws his affection, I do not regret what

I bestowed on him of my pure love.

So I forgive his fault to cultivate his friendship,

and conceal some of what comes to light about him.

For closing both your eyes to a friend's fault

better preserves brotherhood, by your life, and is nobler.
