كأكل الأرض ساقطة الحديدِ

I have seen the nights consume a man,

I have seen the nights devour man,

as earth consumes the flakes that fall from iron.

as the earth devours fallen scraps of iron.

وما تبغي المنية حين تأتي

وما تبغي المنية حين تأتي

على نفس ابن آدم من مزيد

على نفس ابن آدم من مزيد

And when Death comes, she seeks

And death, when it comes, seeks nothing

nothing more from the soul of a child of Adam.

beyond the soul of a son of Adam.

وأعلمُ أنها ستكر حتى

وأعلمُ أنها ستكر حتى

توفي نذرها بأبي الوليدِ

And I know she will charge again, until

And I know that it will return until

she fulfills her vow by taking Abu al-Walid.

Though one day I was stricken by the loss of my peers,

Even if I am one day bereaved of my companions,

I had indeed been granted the pleasure of far-reaching hope.

I have indeed enjoyed far-reaching hope.
