لِحاظُهُhis glances تُطْمِعُinspire hope فِيin نَيْلِهِattaining him
وَتِيهُهُand his haughtiness يُؤْيِسُcauses despair مِنْof وَصْلِهِunion with him
His glances inspire hope of winning him,
Yet his haughtiness makes one despair of union with him.
أَفْدِيI would ransom الَّذِيthe one who أَسْرَفَwas lavish فِيin جُودِهِhis generosity
فَأَيَسَand so made despair الْعاشِقَthe lover مِنْof عَذْلِهِreproaching him
I would ransom him who was lavish in his generosity,
And made the lover despair of reproaching him.
قُلْتُI said لَهُto him وَالْغَنْجُand coquetry كُحْلٌkohl لَهُfor him
وَالشَّكْلُand grace مَنْسُوبٌattributed إلىto شَكْلِهِhis grace
I said to him, with coquetry as his kohl,
And grace traced back to his grace:
تُنْكِرُyou condemn ظُلْمَwronging النَّاسِpeople عُشَّاقَهُمْtheir lovers
وَأَنْتَand you تَجْرِيyou proceed بِيwith me إلىtoward مِثْلِهِits like
You condemn people for wronging their lovers,
Yet you lead me toward the same.
