    أَعَفُّ وَأَوفى بِالجِوارِ وَأَحمَدُ

    Your captive has a better father than yours,

    More chaste, more faithful in protecting neighbors, and more praiseworthy;

    And more skillful with the lance in battle, when the horses are checked

    At daybreak by the splintered, stiff-shafted spear.

    Then why did ʿAmr ibn Jābir, amid the tumult, not

    Keep his pledge—and ʿIṣyad, son of the foundling woman?

    There will come to you from me, though I am far away,

    The smoke of ʿalandā-wood—a defense before my house:

    Poems uttered by a man who wears you as sandals,

    Sons of the pregnant she-camel: wear them as cloaks and hang them round your necks.
