What friend deserves good regard and affection,

when most of these people keep no pledge?

    فَهَل دافِعٌ عَنّي نَوائِبَها الجَهدُ

    I seek from the days what does them no harm;

will effort, then, ward off their calamities from me?

This world is not obedient to us,

and no creature can avoid humoring it.

A weakling has retainers and slaves,

while the peerless hero serves himself in it.

Every kinsman of mine is distant in affection,

and every friend has rancor between his ribs.

By God, what a heart! Its burning thirst is not quenched

by union; no knot distracts it from undoing it.

    وَأَينَ العُلا إِن لَم يُساعِدنِيَ الجَدُّ

    It charges me to seek honor with spears;

but where are the heights if fortune does not aid me?

My love accords with the wishes of my spear and my keen sword,

    and a full-length, fine-linked coat of mail, and a full-length, stout one.

Oh, what a heart has blazed within my breast,

and what abundant tears, with a swelling tide!

Even if the days bring forth every great calamity,

I have a tawny lion between my ribs to face them.

If the keen sword does not cut of itself,

the resolute striker gripping its hilt has an edge of his own.

Around me, apart from the rest of mankind, is a band

whose friendliness is hidden, while their grudges show.

Time gladdens a young man it had once distressed,

and the days serve him, though he is their slave.

There is no wealth but that whose gaining brings you

praise; nor is there wealth for one who has no glory.

None has lived but he who keeps company with young men,

highborn nobles who care nothing for bad fortune or good.

    وَإِن نُدِبوا يَوماً إِلى غارَةٍ جَدّوا

    If one day they are called to a campaign, they gird themselves;

and if one day summoned to a raid, they hasten in earnest.

Ah, would that I knew: will it bear me to my desires,

and carry me to meet my foes—a steed galloping as though swimming?

A noble steed: when its breast cleaves the throngs,

it goes toward the tribes' women in litters at dusk or dawn.

Nimble on the quarry's trail through the wilderness,

when the sunbaked ground blazes and the chase shifts course.

A band from the clan of ʿAbs accompanies me,

whose honor reaches far among the tribes.

Noble lords, like lions in every field,

as though their enemies' blood were honey in their mouths.
