جُفونُthe eyelids of العَذارىthe maidens مِنfrom خِلالِbetween البَراقِعِthe face veils
أَحَدُّsharper مِنَthan البيضِthe white swords الرِقاقِthin القَواطِعِkeen-cutting
The maidens’ eyelids, through their face veils,
The eyelids of virgins through veils
are sharper than thin, white, keen-edged swords.
Are sharper than thin, white, cutting blades
إِذاwhen جُرِّدَتthey are unsheathed ذَلَّis humbled الشُجاعُthe brave man وَأَصبَحَتand become
مَحاجِرُهُhis eye sockets قَرحىsore بِفَيضِwith a flood of المَدامِعِtears
When they are unsheathed, the brave man is humbled, and
When that brave one was stripped bare and his
his eye sockets grow sore from a flood of tears.
Cheeks became wounds overflowing with tears
سَقىmay give drink to اللَهُGod عَمّيmy uncle مِنfrom يَدِthe hand of المَوتِdeath جَرعَةًa draught
وَشُلَّتand may be paralyzed يَداهُhis two hands بَعدَafter قَطعِthe severing of الأَصابِعِthe fingers
May God give my uncle a draught from death’s hand,
God let my uncle drink from death’s hand a draught
and may his hands be paralyzed after his fingers are severed,
And his hands were paralyzed after fingers cut off
كَماjust as قادَhe led مِثليone like me بِالمُحالِthrough the impossible إِلىto الرَدىdoom
وَعَلَّقَand he hung آماليmy hopes بِذَيلِon the hem of المَطامِعِcovetous desires
just as he led one like me to doom through the impossible,
Just as one like me was led by the impossible to ruin
and hung my hopes on the hem of covetous desires.
And my hopes were hung on the tail of ambitions
لَقَدindeed وَدَّعَتنيshe bade me farewell عَبلَةٌAbla يَومَon the day of بَينِهاher departure
وَداعَa farewell of يَقينٍcertainty أَنَّنيthat I غَيرُnot راجِعِreturning
Indeed, Abla bade me farewell on the day of her departure,
Ablah bid me farewell one day between us
the farewell of one certain I would not return.
A farewell of certainty that I am not returning
وَناحَتand she lamented وَقالَتand she said كَيفَhow تُصبِحُwill you fare بَعدَناafter us
إِذاwhen غِبتَyou are gone عَنّاfrom us فيin القِفارِthe deserts الشَواسِعِvast
And she lamented and said, “How will you fare after leaving us,
And she cried and said how after us will you become
when you are gone from us in the vast deserts?
When you are absent from us in the bare wildernesses
وَحَقِّكَby your honor لاnever حاوَلتُI sought فيin الدَهرِall time سَلوَةًforgetfulness
وَلاnor غَيَّرَتنيturned me عَنaway from هَواكَlove for you مَطامِعيmy ambitions
By your honor, never in all my days shall I seek forgetfulness,
By your right I have not in this life sought comfort
nor shall my ambitions turn me from my love for you.
Nor have my ambitions changed me from loving you
فَكُنso be واثِقاًconfident مِنّيof me بِحُسنِof the goodness of مَوَدَّةٍaffection
وَعِشand live ناعِماًat ease فيin غِبطَةٍhappiness غَيرِnot جازِعِanguished
So be assured of my sincere affection,
So be assured of me with kindness of affection
and live at ease in happiness, free from anguish.”
And live blissful in joy without distress
فَقُلتُthen I said لَهاto her ياO عَبلَAbla إِنّيindeed I مُسافِرٌa traveler
وَلَوand even if عَرَضَتstood in the way دونيbefore me حُدودُthe edges of القَواطِعِkeen swords
Then I said to her, “O Abla, I am setting out,
I said Ablah I am a traveller
even if the edges of keen swords stand in my way.
Even if before me are the limits of cutting blades
خُلِقناwe were created لِهَذاfor this الحُبَّlove مِنfrom قَبلِbefore يَومِناour day
فَماso not يَدخُلُenters التَفنيدُcensure فيهِconcerning it مَسامِعيmy ears
We were created for this love before our day,
We were created for this love before our days
so no censure of it shall enter my ears.”
So refusal cannot enter my hearing
أَياO عَلَمَlandmark of السَعدِيِّal-Sa'di هَلwhether أَناI راجِعٌreturning
وَأَنظُرُand I look فيin قُطرَيكَyour two sides زَهرَthe blossoms of الأَراجِعِal-Araji'
O landmark of al-Sa'di, shall I return,
O red flag of good tidings will I return
and see, on your two sides, the blossoms of al-Araji',
And see in your valleys the flowers of those returning
وَتُبصِرُand sees عَينيmy eye الرَبوَتَينِthe two hills وَحاجِراًand Hajir
وَسُكّانَand the inhabitants of ذاكَthat الجِزعِvalley bend بَينَamong المَراتِعِthe pastures
and will my eye behold the two hills and Hajir,
And my eyes see the hillocks and a cheek
and the dwellers of that valley bend among the pastures?
And dwellers of that grief between the meadows
وَتَجمَعُناand brings us together أَرضُthe land of الشَرَبَّةِal-Sharabba وَاللِوىand al-Liwa
وَنَرتَعُand we roam at ease فيin أَكنافِthe environs of تِلكَthose المَرابِعِspringtime pastures
And will the land of al-Sharabba and al-Liwa bring us together,
And the land of Al-Sharbbah and Al-Liwa brings us together
and shall we roam at ease around those springtime pastures?
And we graze in the bosoms of those encampments
فَياso O نَسَماتِbreezes of البانِthe moringa trees بِاللَهِby God خَبِّريtell
عُبَيلَةَUbayla عَنabout رَحليmy camp بِأَيِّin which المَواضِعِplaces
So, O breezes of the moringa trees, by God, tell
So O breezes of ebony with God tell
Ubayla where my camp lies.
Ubaylah about my journey in which places
وَياand O بَرقُlightning بَلِّغهاconvey to her الغَداةَin the morning تَحِيَّتيmy greeting
وَحَيِّand greet دِياريmy dwellings فيin الحِمىthe protected pasture وَمَضاجِعيand my sleeping places
And, O lightning, convey my greeting to her in the morning,
And O lightning convey to her my greetings in the morning
and greet my dwellings in the protected pasture and my sleeping places.
And the living of my dwellings in sanctuary and resting places
أَياO صادِحاتِsongbirds of الأَيكِthe grove إِنif مُتُّI die فَاِندُبيthen lament
عَلىover تُربَتيmy grave’s earth بَينَamong الطُيورِthe birds السَواجِعِcooing
O songbirds of the grove, if I die, lament
O you who loudly weep, weep for me
over the earth of my grave, among the cooing birds.
Over my soil among the saddened birds
وَنوحيand mourn عَلىfor مَنone who ماتَdied ظُلماًwrongfully وَلَمand did not يَنَلobtain
سِوىexcept البُعدِseparation عَنfrom أَحبابِهِhis loved ones وَالفَجائِعِand calamities
And mourn one who died wronged and gained nothing
And mourn for one who died unjustly and attained
but separation from his loved ones and calamities.
Nothing but distance from his loved ones and catastrophes
وَياand O خَيلُhorses فَاِبكيthen weep فارِساًa horseman كانَused to يَلتَقيmeet
صُدورَthe breasts of المَناياdeadly fates فيin غُبارِthe dust of المَعامِعِfierce battles
And, O horses, weep for a horseman who once faced
And O horses cry for a knight who used to meet
the breasts of death amid the dust of fierce battles.
The chests of death blows in the dust of ambitions
فَأَمسىso he became بَعيداًfar away فيin غَرامٍpassion وَذِلَّةٍand humiliation
وَقَيدٍand a fetter ثَقيلٍheavy مِنfrom قُيودِthe fetters of التَوابِعِthe dependents
So he is now far away, in passion and humiliation,
And he ended up far in love and humiliation
and in a heavy fetter of the kind that binds dependents.
And heavy chains of shackles and consequences
وَلَستُand I am not بِباكٍweeping إِنif أَتَتنيcomes to me مَنِيَّتيmy death
وَلَكِنَّنيand yet I أَهفوI yearn فَتَجريso flow مَدامِعيmy tears
I shall not weep if my death comes to me,
I do not weep if my death comes upon me
but I yearn, and so my tears flow.
But my tears flow and I ardently yearn
وَلَيسَand it is not بِفَخرٍboasting وَصفُdescribing بَأسيmy valor وَشِدَّتيand my strength
وَقَدand already شاعَhas spread ذِكريmy renown فيin جَميعِall المَجامِعِthe gatherings
Nor is it boasting to describe my valor and strength,
It is no boast to describe my might and firmness
for my renown has spread through every gathering.
When my reputation has spread through all gatherings
بِحَقِّby the right of الهَوىlove لاdo not تَعذِلونيreproach me وَأَقصِرواand desist
عَنِfrom اللَومِblame إِنَّindeed اللَومَblame لَيسَis not بِنافِعِof any use
For love’s sake, do not reproach me, and desist
By the right of passion, do not blame me and refrain
from blame, for blame is of no use.
From fault, for blame brings no benefit
وَكَيفَand how أُطيقُcan I bear الصَبرَpatient endurance عَمَّنaway from the one whom أُحِبُّهُI love him
وَقَدand already أُضرِمَتhas been kindled نارُthe fire of الهَوىpassion فيin أَضالِعيmy ribs
How can I endure being apart from the one I love,
And how can I endure patience from one I love
when the fire of passion has been kindled within my ribs?
When the fire of passion has been lit inside me
