اِصبِرstand firm حُصَينُḤuṣayn لَئِنif indeed تَرَكتَyou have left بِوَجهِهِon his face
أَثَراًa mark فَإِنّيthen indeed I لاnot إِخالُكَI think you تَصبِرُyou will endure
Stand firm, Ḥuṣayn: if indeed you have left upon his face
a mark, then I do not think you will endure.
ماnot سَرَّنيpleased me أَنَّthat القِنانَthe spearpoints تَخَرَّفَتswerved
عَمّاfrom what أَصابَتthey struck مِنof حِجاجِthe bony rim of المَحجَرِthe eye socket
It would not have pleased me had the spearpoints swerved
from the bony rim of the eye socket they struck.
إِنَّindeed الكَريمَthe noble man نُدوبُهُhis scars فيon وَجهِهِhis face
وَنُدوبُand the scars of مُرَّةَMurrah لاnot تُرىare seen فيat المَنحَرِthe throat
Indeed, a noble man's scars are on his face,
and Murrah's scars are not seen at the throat,
لَكِنَّbut rather فيon أَكتافِهِمtheir shoulders وَظُهورِهِمand their backs
فَبِذاكَso of that فَاِفخَرthen boast بِئسَwretched is ذاكَthat المَفخَرُsource of pride
but rather on their shoulders and their backs.
So boast of that—what a wretched source of pride!
