ذَنبيmy offense لِعَبلَةَtoward Abla ذَنبٌan offense غَيرُnot مُغتَفِرِforgiven
لَمّاwhen تَبَلَّجَbroke into light صُبحُthe dawn الشَيبِof gray hair فيin شَعريmy hair
My offense against Abla is an unforgivable offense,
When the dawn of grayness broke through my hair.
رَمَتshe shot عُبَيلَةُUbayla قَلبيmy heart مِنfrom لَواحِظِهاher sidelong glances
بِكُلِّwith every سَهمٍarrow غَريقِdeep النَزعِthe bow-draw فيin الحَوَرِthe eyes' black-and-white contrast
From her sidelong glances, Ubayla shot at my heart
With every shaft drawn to the full in her black-and-white eyes.
فَاِعجَبso marvel لَهُنَّat them سِهاماًarrows غَيرَnot طائِشَةٍstraying
مِنَfrom الجُفونِthe eyelids بِلاwithout قَوسٍa bow وَلاand no وَتَرِbowstring
So marvel at them: arrows that never stray,
From the eyelids, without bow or bowstring.
كَمhow often قَدindeed حَفِظتَyou have kept ذِمامَthe covenant القَومِof the people مِنout of وَلَهٍpassionate yearning

يَعتادُنيreturns to me لَبَناتِfor maidens الدَلِّcoquetry وَالخَفَرِand modesty
How often you have kept faith with the people, out of yearning
That returns to me for maidens of coquetry and modesty—
مُهَفهَفاتٍslender-waisted maidens يَغارُgrows jealous الغُصنُthe branch حينَwhen يَرىit sees

Slender-waisted maidens: the branch grows jealous when it sees
Their figures, some swaying, others bending.

O dwelling over which my tears flow whenever
The clouds begrudge the ruins their rain.
أَرضُland الشَرَبَّةِof al-Sharabba كَمhow often قَضَّيتُI fulfilled مُبتَهِجاًrejoicing

Land of al-Sharabba—how often I joyfully fulfilled
A desire there, with graceful maidens and companions of like age!
أَيّامَin the days when غُصنُthe branch شَبابيof my youth فيin نُعومَتِهِits tenderness
أَلهوI make merry بِماwith what فيهِis in it مِنof زَهرٍblossoms وَمِنand of ثَمَرِfruit
In the days when the branch of my youth was tender,
I delighted in its blossoms and its fruit.
فيin كُلِّevery يَومٍday لَناfor us مِنfrom نَشرِهاher fragrance سَحَراًbefore dawn
ريحٌa breeze شَذاهاits scent كَنَشرِlike the fragrance الزَهرِof flowers فيin السَحَرِthe pre-dawn hours
Each day, before dawn, there came to us from her fragrance
A breeze whose scent was like the flowers' perfume before dawn.
وَكُلُّand every غُصنٍbough قَويمٍstraight راقَdelighted مَنظَرُهُits appearance

And every straight bough whose appearance delights—
Her lover's only share of it is the sight.

رَكائِبيmy riding camels بَينَbetween وِردِapproach to water العَزمِof resolve وَالصَدَرِand return from water
I fear for her; were it not for that, never would
My mounts have halted between resolve's approach to water and its return.

No indeed! Nor, after closeness, would I be content
With news of her, however distant her dwelling.
هُمُthey الأَحِبَّةُthe beloved ones إِنthough خانواthey betray وَإِنand though نَقَضواthey break
عَهديmy covenant فَماso not حُلتُI have turned عَنfrom وَجديmy passionate longing وَلاand not فِكريmy thoughts
They are the beloved, though they betray and though they break
My covenant; I have not turned from my longing or my thoughts.

I complain of estrangement, in secret and in public,
With a lament that leaves its mark on solid stone.
