My heart sobered after its drunkenness,

And sweet slumber returned to my eye.

And whoever defies me has become abased,

Heavy with care, with no one to ransom him.

In his sleep he sees my sword's deadly strokes,

So he complains to his pillow of what he sees.

Listen, O Abla: you have witnessed my deeds,

And you can now tell error from right guidance.

And if you see my equal, then forsake me,

And no shame shall befall you because of my blackness.

Otherwise, recall my thrusts and blows,

When your people persist in keeping me away.

I raided Kindah's dwellings by night, as they resounded

With thunder's roar from the galloping of steeds.

And I scattered the horsemen upon its hills,

With thrusts leaving wounds like the mouths of waterskins.

And Khath'am—we struck them in a morning raid,

Early, before the caller cried out.

They departed when they saw, from my sword's edge,

    Death's herald driving souls onward.

And we returned with plunder and captive women,

And with prisoners shackled in fetters.
