Lo, who will convey to the deniers
the words of a young man faithful to his pledges?
سَأَخرُجُI shall go out لِلبِرازِfor single combat خَلِيَّfree of بالٍcare
بِقَلبٍwith a heart قُدَّhewn مِنfrom زُبَرِblocks of الحَديدِiron
I shall go out to single combat, free of care,
with a heart hewn from blocks of iron.
وَأَطعَنُand I thrust بِالقَناwith spears حَتّىuntil يَرانيhe sees me
عَدوّيmy enemy كَالشَرارَةِlike a spark مِنfrom بَعيدِafar
And I thrust with spears until I am seen
by my enemy like a spark from afar.

وَطابَand became sweet المَوتُdeath لِلرَجُلِto the man الشَديدِstrong
When war turns its millstone for me,
and death grows sweet to the strong man,

you see white swords gleaming in its blaze,
already clinging fast to the upper arms and forearms.
فَأَقحَمُهاso I plunge into it وَلَكِنand yet مَعwith رِجالٍmen
كَأَنَّas though قُلوبَهاtheir hearts حَجَرُstone of الصَعيدِthe earth
So I plunge into it, yet with men
as though their hearts were stone from the earth,

and horses trained to wade into death,
that turn a newborn child's crown gray.
سَأَحمِلُI shall charge بِالأُسودِwith lions عَلىagainst أُسودٍlions
وَأَخضِبُand I dye ساعِديmy forearm بِدَمِwith the blood of الأُسودِlions

I shall charge with lions against lions,
and dye my forearm with the blood of lions,
بِمَملَكَةٍin a kingdom عَلَيهاupon it تاجُa crown of عِزٍّglory
وَقَومٍand men مِنfrom بَنيthe sons of عَبسٍAbs شُهودِwitnesses
in a kingdom bearing a crown of glory,
and with men of Banu Abs as witnesses.
فَأَمّاso, as for القائِلونَthose who say هِزَبرُa lion of قَومٍa tribe
فَذاكَthen that الفَخرُglory لاnot شَرَفُthe nobility of الجُدودِthe forefathers
So as for those who say, 'A tribe's lion'—
that is glory, not the nobility of forefathers.
وَأَمّاand as for القائِلونَthose who say قَتيلُone slain by طَعنٍa spear-thrust
فَذَلِكَthen that مَصرَعُthe fall of البَطَلِthe hero الجَليدِstouthearted
And as for those who say, 'Slain by a spear-thrust'—
that is the fall of the stouthearted hero.
