دَعleave behind ماwhat مَضىhas passed لَكَfor you فيin الزَمانِthe time الأَوَّلِthe earlier
وَعَلىand on الحَقيقَةِthe truth إِنif عَزَمتَyou are resolved فَعَوِّلِthen rely
Leave behind what passed in your earlier days.
Let go of what has passed, for in the first era of time
And if you are resolved, rely on the truth.
And if you are resolute in truth, then rely upon it
إِنif كُنتَyou were أَنتَyou yourself قَطَعتَcrossed بَرّاًopen land مُقفَراًdesolate
وَسَلَكتَهُand traversed it تَحتَbeneath الدُجىthe darkness فيin جَحفَلِa great army
If you yourself have crossed a desolate land
If you have traversed a barren rugged road
And traversed it beneath the darkness with a great host,
And walked it in the darkness of nightfall
فَأَناyet I سَرَيتُtraveled by night مَعَwith الثُرَيّاthe Pleiades مُفرَداًalone
لاno مُؤنِسٌcompanion ليfor me غَيرَother than حَدِّthe edge of المُنصُلِthe blade
Yet I traveled by night with the Pleiades, alone,
While I roamed with the Pleiades alone
With no companion but the blade's edge.
With no companion but the sharp edge of my sword
وَالبَدرُand the full moon مِنfrom فَوقِabove السَحابِthe clouds يَسوقُهُdrives it along
فَيَسيرُso it moves سَيرَat the pace of الراكِبِthe rider المُستَعجِلِhurrying
And the full moon drives the clouds from above,
And the moon above the clouds leading it
So they move like a rider in haste.
Traveling like a rider in haste
وَالنَسرُand the Eagle star نَحوَtoward الغَربِthe west يَرميcasts نَفسَهُitself
فَيَكادُso it nearly يَعثُرُstumbles بِالسِماكِover Spica الأَعزَلِthe Unarmed
And the Eagle casts itself toward the west,
And the eagle toward the west hurling itself
So it nearly stumbles over Spica, the Unarmed.
Nearly stumbling on the bare crags
وَالغولُand the ghoul بَينَbetween يَدَيَّmy two hands يَخفىvanishes تارَةًsometimes
وَيَعودُand returns يَظهَرُappears مِثلَlike ضَوءِthe light of المَشعَلِthe torch
And the ghoul before me vanishes at times,
And the ghoul before me hiding at times
And reappears like the light of a torch,
Then reappearing like the light of a torch
بِنَواظِرٍwith eyes زُرقٍblue وَوَجهٍand a face أَسوَدٍblack
وَأَظافِرٍand claws يُشبِهنَresemble حَدَّthe edge of المِنجَلِthe sickle
With blue eyes and a black face,
With blue eyes and a blackened face
And claws resembling a sickle's edge.
And claws resembling the blade of a sickle
وَالجِنُّand the jinn تَفرَقُtake fright حَولَaround غاباتِthe thickets of الفَلاthe wilderness
بِهَماهِمٍwith murmurs وَدَمادِمٍand rumblings لَمdid not تَغفَلِgrow heedless
And the jinn take fright around the wilderness thickets,
And the jinn scattered about the woods of night
With murmurs and rumblings, never heedless.
Murmuring and whispering and not asleep
وَإِذاand when رَأَتthey see سَيفيmy sword تَضِجُّthey clamor مَخافَةًin fear
كَضَجيجِlike the clamor of نوقِthe she-camels of الحَيِّthe tribe حَولَaround المَنزِلِthe camp
And when they see my sword, they clamor in fear,
And when they see my sword shuddering in fear
Like the clamor of the tribe's she-camels around the camp.
Like the neighing of steeds around a camp
تِلكَthose اللَياليnights لَوif يَمُرُّwere to pass حَديثُهاtheir tale
بِوَليدِto a newborn of قَومٍa tribe شابَwould turn gray قَبلَbefore المَحمِلِthe litter
Those nights—were their tale to reach
Those nights, if their tale passed
A tribe's newborn, he would turn gray before being carried in a litter.
By a lively youth before maturity
فَاكفُفso desist وَدَعand leave عَنكَaway from you الإِطالَةَlong-windedness وَاِقتَصِرand be brief
وَإِذاand if اِستَطَعتَyou can اليَومَtoday شَيئاًsomething فَاِفعَلِthen do it
So desist, set aside long-windedness, and be brief;
Then refrain, leave off prolonging, and be concise
And if you can do something today, then do it.
And if today you can do something, then do
