سَليAsk ياO اِبنَةَdaughter of العَبسِيِّthe man of Abs رُمحيmy spear وَصارِميand my keen sword
وَماand what فَعَلاthey both did فيon يَومِthe day of حَربِwar against الأَعاجِمِthe non-Arabs
Ask, O daughter of the Absi, my spear and my keen sword,
What they both did on the day of war against the non-Arabs.
I gave them both drink وَالخَيلُand the horses تَعثُرُstumble بِالقَناover the spears
دِماءَthe blood of العِداthe foes مَمزوجَةًmingled بِالعَلاقِمِwith bitter colocynth
I made them both drink, while horses stumbled over spears,
The blood of foes, mingled with bitter colocynth.
وَفَرَّقتُand I scattered جَيشاًan army كانَthere was فيin جَنَباتِهِits flanks
دَمادِمُrumbles of رَعدٍthunder تَحتَbeneath بَرقِthe lightning of الصَوارِمِthe keen swords
And I scattered an army in whose ranks
Were peals of thunder beneath the lightning of keen swords,
عَلىon مُهرَةٍa filly مَنسوبَةٍpedigreed عَرَبِيَّةٍArabian
تَطيرُshe flies إِذاwhen اِشتَدَّgrows fierce الوَغىthe battle بِالقَوائِمِon her legs
On a pedigreed Arabian filly,
Who flies on her legs when battle grows fierce.
وَتَصهَلُand she neighs خَوفاًin fear وَالرِماحُand the spears قَواصِدٌaimed
إِلَيهاat her وَتَنسَلُّand she slips away اِنسِلالَthe gliding of الأَراقِمِthe speckled snakes
And she neighs in fear while spears are aimed
At her, and she slips away with the glide of speckled snakes.
قَحَمتُI plunged بِهاwith her بَحرَthe sea of المَناياdeath فَحَمحَمَتthen she neighed softly
وَقَدand already غَرِقَتshe had sunk فيin مَوجِهِits waves المُتَلاطِمِclashing together
I plunged with her into the sea of death; then she gave a low neigh,
While she was submerged in its clashing waves.
وَكَمand many a فارِسٍhorseman ياO عَبلَAbla غادَرتُI left ثاوِياًlying low
يَعَضُّhe bites عَلىon كَفَّيهِboth his hands عَضَّةَthe bite of نادِمِa remorseful man
And many a horseman, O Abla, I have left lying low,
Biting both his hands as a remorseful man does.
تُقَلِّبُهُturn him over وَحشُwild beasts of الفَلاthe wasteland وَتَنوشُهُand snatch at him
مِنَfrom الجَوِّthe sky أَسرابُflocks of النُسورِthe vultures القَشاعِمِthe huge, aged ones
Desert beasts turn him over, and he is snatched at
From the sky by flocks of great old vultures.
أُحِبُّI love بَنيthe sons of عَبسٍAbs وَلَوand even if هَدَرواthey deemed forfeit دَميmy blood
لِأَجلِكِfor your sake ياO بِنتَdaughter of السَراةِthe noble chiefs الأَكارِمِthe most generous
I love the sons of Abs, even if they deem my blood forfeit,
For your sake, O daughter of noble, generous chiefs.
وَأَحمِلُand I bear ثِقلَthe weight of الضَيمِoppression وَالضَيمُand oppression جائِرٌunjust
وَأُظهِرُand I make it appear أَنّيthat I am ظالِمٌa wrongdoer وَاِبنُand the son of ظالِمِa wrongdoer
And I bear the burden of oppression, though oppression is unjust,
And I present myself as a wrongdoer and a wrongdoer's son.
