سائِلask عُمَيرَةَʿUmayrah حَيثُwhere حَلَّتshe encamped جَمعَهاher host
سائِل عُمَيرَةَ حَيثُ حَلَّت جَمعَها
عِندَduring الحُروبِthe wars بِأَيِّto which حَيٍّtribe تُلحَقُshe is attached
عِندَ الحُروبِ بِأَيِّ حَيٍّ تُلحَقُ
Ask ʿUmayra, wherever her host has encamped,
Ask ʿUmayrah, where she has encamped her host,
In war, to which tribe does she attach herself?
in wartime, to which tribe she is attached:
أَبِحَيِّis it to the tribe of قَيسٍQays أَمor بِعُذرَةَto ʿUdhrah بَعدَماafter
أَبِحَيِّ قَيسٍ أَم بِعُذرَةَ بَعدَما
رُفِعَwas raised اللِواءُthe banner لَهَfor him وَبِئسَand wretched is المَلحَقُthe affiliation
رُفِعَ اللِواءُ لَهَ وَبِئسَ المَلحَقُ
To the tribe of Qays, or to ʿUdhra, after
To the tribe of Qays, or to ʿUdhrah, after
The standard was raised for her? Wretched is that refuge.
the banner was raised for him—and wretched is that affiliation!
وَاِسأَلand ask حُذَيفَةَḤudhayfah حينَwhen أَرَّشَhe stirred up بَيْنناbetween us
وَاِسأَل حُذَيفَةَ حينَ أَرَّشَ بَيْننا
حَرباًa war ذَوائِبُهاits tresses بِمَوتٍwith death تَخفِقُflutter
حَرباً ذَوائِبُها بِمَوتٍ تَخفِقُ
And ask Hudhayfa, when he kindled between us
And ask Ḥudhayfah, when he stirred up between us
A war whose tresses flutter with death.

فَلتَعلَمَنَّthen you shall surely know إِذاwhen اِلتَقَتmet فُرْسانُنَاour horsemen
فَلتَعلَمَنَّ إِذا اِلتَقَت فُرْسانُنَا
بِلِوىat the sandy bend of النُجَيرَةِal-Nujayrah أَنَّthat ظَنَّكَyour supposition أَحمَقُfoolish
بِلِوى النُجَيرَةِ أَنَّ ظَنَّكَ أَحمَقُ
You shall surely know, when our horsemen meet
Then you shall surely know, when our horsemen meet
At Liwā al-Nujayra, that your judgment was foolish.
at the sandy bend of al-Nujayrah, that your supposition is foolish.
