We brought the horses from both sides of Arik,

Gaunt, pressing resolutely over the soft ground,

نَزائِعَ لِلغُرابِ بِنا تُباري

خَوارِجَ كَالسَمَامِ مِنَ الغُبَارِ

Straining forward, racing the raven with us astride,

Competing with the raven over us

Emerging like swifts from the dust.

Outcasts like locusts from the dust

صَبَحناهُنَّ يَومَ الأَتمِ شُعثاً

فِراساً وَالقَبائِلَ مِن غِفارِ

At dawn on the day of al-Atm, disheveled, we brought them

I left the birds gathered over him,

I left the birds hovering over it

As women gather around Duwar.

As women hovered over the vat

فَجَعتُهُمُ بِخَيرِهِمِ نَديماً

فَجَعتُهُمُ بِخَيرِهِمِ نَديماً

وَأَطعَمِهِم لَدى قَحطِ القِطارِ

وَأَطعَمِهِم لَدى قَحطِ القِطارِ

I bereaved them of their finest boon companion,

So I made them, at their best, boon companions

And their most generous giver of food when the rains failed.

And fed them in time of scarcity of provisions
