أَلَم تَرَ أَنَّني رَجُلٌ صَبورٌ

أَلَم تَرَ أَنَّني رَجُلٌ صَبورٌ

إِذا ما المَرءُ لَم يَهمُم بِصَبرِ

Have you not seen that I am a steadfast man,

Do you not see that I am a patient man

when a man gives no thought to endurance?

When a person does not care for patience

وَأَنّي بِالذَنائِبِ يَومَ خَوٍّ

وَأَنّي بِالذَنائِبِ يَومَ خَوٍّ

مَنَنتُ عَلى حُذَيفَةَ بَعدَ أَسرِ

مَنَنتُ عَلى حُذَيفَةَ بَعدَ أَسرِ

And that I, at al-Dhana'ib, on the day of Khaww,

And that after capturing Hudhayfa

showed mercy to Hudhayfah after his capture?

I was generous with him after taking him prisoner

وَلَو غَيري يَجيءُ بِهِ أَسيراً

وَلَو غَيري يَجيءُ بِهِ أَسيراً

لَنالَ بِهِ رَغيبةَ ذُخرِ دَهرِ

لَنالَ بِهِ رَغيبةَ ذُخرِ دَهرِ

And had someone other than me brought him captive,

If another had brought him prisoner

he would have gained through him a prized treasure for a lifetime.

He would have gained the desires of a lifetime with him

وَلَكِنّي مَنَنتُ وَكانَ أَهلاً

وَلَكِنّي مَنَنتُ وَكانَ أَهلاً

لِما أَولَيتُ في حَملِ بِن بَدرِ

لِما أَولَيتُ في حَملِ بِن بَدرِ

And yet I showed mercy, and he was worthy

But I was generous and he was worthy

of what I bestowed concerning Haml ibn Badr.
