مَتىwhen كُنَّاwere we لِأُمِّكَto your mother مَقتَويناservants
Threaten us and menace us—but gently!
If defeated, we don't accept survival
When were we servants to your mother?
We've filled the land until it was too narrow
فَإِنَّfor indeed قَناتَناour spear-shaft ياO عَمرُوAmr أَعيَتproved too stubborn

For our spear-shaft, Amr, has proved too stubborn
And we're the sea, filling it like a ship
For enemies before you ever to make it bend.
When a wee babe of ours is weaned
إِذاwhen عَضَّbites الثِقافُthe straightening-clamp بِهاon it اِشمَأَزَّتit recoils

When the straightening-clamp bites it, it recoils,
Tyrants bow to him, worship his grip
And turns on them, rough and fiercely resistant.
عَشَوزَنَةًrough and knotty إِذاwhen اِنقَلَبَتit swings back أَرَنَّتit rings

Rough: when it swings back, it rings,
Pure bred, born in the valley of Dann
Splitting the straightener's nape and brow.
The years make easy, though preserved the line

Have you ever heard of Jusham son of Bakr
As though the gray hair in the ear comes
Being found wanting in the struggles of the ancients?
When they hit their foreheads from drinking wine
وَرِثناwe inherited مَجدَthe glory of عَلقَمَةَAlqamah بنِson of سَيفٍSayf

We inherited the glory of Alqamah son of Sayf,
Who opened glory's strongholds to us by force.

I inherited Muhalhil, and one better than him,
Of boys went crazy, obsessed with its shine
Zuhayr—an excellent treasure for those who store treasures—
They didn't stop drinking till they said

And Attab and Kulthum together;
We've had our fill, O pour no more wine
Through them we gained the noblest men's legacy.
Does Layla's father blame me now

And Dhu al-Burah, of whom you have heard:
Her brothers too though they oppressed, maligned?
Through him we are defended and defend the hard-pressed.
A throat like the full moon's radiant light

Before him, among us was the tireless Kulayb;
Filling completely the scale and defined
What glory is there that we have not attained?
Ibn Hind, what fate do you see
مَتىwhenever نَعقِدwe tie قَرينَتَناour paired she-camel بِحَبلٍwith a rope

Whenever we tie our she-camel to another with a rope,
That we're the lowest, weakest in kind?
She severs the rope or breaks the camel tied to her.
Ibn Hind, what fate do you see
وَنوجَدُand we are found نَحنُwe أَمنَعُهُمthe most protective among them ذِماراًof all held sacred

We are found the staunchest defenders of all we hold sacred,
We advance, though we're left behind?
And the truest when they bind themselves by oath.
The tribes of Ma'add by our fires sailed

On the morning fire was kindled at Khazaza,
And we were the kindlers of flame, fire's sign
We gave aid beyond the aid of all who aided.
Though their hearts revenge on Akk did want
وَنَحنُand we الحابِسونَthose who kept the herds بِذيat Dhu أُراطىUrata

We are those who kept the herds at Dhu Urata,
And they ambushed when made an ambush line
The great, abundant-milking camels grazing withered grass.

We are the judges when obeyed,
To Bani Nizarr we left the crown
And the resolute when defied.
And theirs it became in Ahwos' sunshine
وَنَحنُand we التارِكونَthose who forsake لِماwhat سَخِطناwe dislike

وَنَحنُand we الآخِذونَthose who take لِماwhat رَضيناwe like
We forsake whatever displeases us,
We lead the horses rounding the foe
And take whatever pleases us.
Pursuing the saddles, insides and spine
وَكُنّاand we were الأَيمَنينَon the right wing إذاwhen اِلتَقَينَاwe met in battle

We held the right wing when we met in battle,
And our father's sons held the left.
We're the ones who when obeyed govern, and

They charged those facing them,
We're decisive when disobeyed
And we charged those facing us.
What we hate we leave be

They returned with plunder and captive women,
What we love we take as our trade
And we returned with kings in fetters.
When we meet we're the favored side

Stand back, sons of Bakr, stand back!
The left are our father's sons, behind
Have you not yet learned the truth about us?
So they raided a pitiful raid
أَلَمّاhave you not yet تَعرِفواcome to know مِنّاfrom us وَمِنكُمand from you

They came back with spoils and slaves

While we came with kings chained, resigned
And carry swords that straighten and bend.
Our white steeds their lineage can trace

Lest they be divided or treated unkind
You see folds in it above the belt.
They've sworn to their husbands that when

They'll seize horses, whites and captives chained

Which the winds ripple as they pass.

On the morning of terror, sleek horses carry us,
Fearing our might have made that their kind
Known as our rescued steeds and those we reared from foals.

As though the camel litters rocked from behind
Like harness-straps, worn thin.
Our steeds say, you're not our husbands if

You do not protect us when entwined
And bequeath them to our sons when we die.

With pedigree and faith designed
Whom we dread to see divided as spoils or dishonored.

We birthed people all, humankind
And captives coupled together in iron.
They behead them as a Rabia dwelling

Beheads snakes by the encampment shrine
Has made fear of us its companion.

Our husbands if you fail to protect us.'

That makes forearms look like tipcat sticks.
