رَمَتنيshot at me بَناتُthe daughters الدَهرِof Time مِنfrom حَيثُwhere لاnot أَرىI see
فَكَيفَso how بِمَنof one who يُرمىis shot at وَلَيسَand is not بِراميan archer
The daughters of Time have shot at me from where I cannot see.
So what of one who is shot at, yet is no archer?
فَلَوso if أَنَّهاthat they were نَبلٌarrows إِذاًthen لَاِتَّقَيتُهاI would have guarded against them
وَلَكِنَّماbut rather أَرميI am shot at بِغَيرِwith something other than سِهامِarrows
So, were they arrows, I would have guarded against them.
But I am struck by things other than arrows.
عَلىon الراحَتَينِthe two palms مَرَّةًonce وَعَلىand on العَصاthe staff
أَنوءُI rise with difficulty ثَلاثاًthree times بَعدَهُنَّafter them قِياميmy standing up
Once on both palms, and on the staff,
I struggle up three times; only then do I stand.

Though he may pass the evening in a life of ease, surely
The long years he has survived have ravaged his face.
