The foreigners’ cavalry have surely learned that I—
I am the defending horseman when others draw back;
وأنّيand that I غداةَon the morning of القادسيّةِal-Qadisiyyah إذwhen أتَواthey came
وأنّي غداةَ القادسيّةِ إذ أتَوا

and that, on the morning of al-Qadisiyyah, when they came
with their army, I was a mighty, fearless lion.
شَدَدتُI charged علىagainst مُهرانَMuhran لمّاwhen لقيتُهُI met him
شَدَدتُ على مُهرانَ لمّا لقيتُهُ

بكَفِّيَ صَمصامُ العقيقةِ مِخذَمُ
I charged against Muhran when I met him,
a keen-edged, cleaving sword in my hand.
فغادرتُهُso I left him يكبوfalling headlong لِحُرٍّonto the front of جبينهِhis brow
فغادرتُهُ يكبو لِحُرٍّ جبينهِ

So I left him falling headlong upon his brow,
with vultures perched upon him and circling overhead.
