He wished to meet me, to kill me,

and you are his support in that.

So had you met my horse,

with its lion upon its back,

then you would have met one with thick

    clawed paws and towering withers,

    unjust in sharing whatever

his claws and paw have seized.

He twists his rival when he meets

him one day, then overpowers him.

He struts as a bull camel struts,

foam upon the ridges of its skull,

driving away from its thick lips

the mosquitoes, its territory well defended.

And had you seen what I have gathered

    upon al-Ward—what you disdain—

you would have seen an ample, supple coat of mail,

and a helmet, its mesh tightly closed,

and a keen sword in my hand—no

one who comes to it tastes water.

    His grandfather's traits—and thus

a son takes after his father.

I commanded you on the day of Dhu Sana'a,

a command whose rightness was clear:

    to undertake good deeds,

then do them and pledge to do them.

So you were like the little donkey's owner,

whom his tethering stake deceived about his donkey.

    And had you seen—and sight

that makes things clear is found by few—

then you would have known that your father

is a lion, his thick mane upon him.
