    Had Abbas been present there,

he would surely have fallen, his brow dyed with safflower.

And indeed, I attacked Umarah with it at dawn,

while white swords rose above him at al-Manshar.

And indeed, I left Abu Tamim, after

the keen sword bit his brow, unburied,

among young men of his people, whose

black beards were dyed with dark-red, pooled blood.

When we joined in close combat, they fluttered away

like ostriches, for fear of al-Ashqar.

Then the men sped onward upon their mounts,

while Sulaym lay slain in the murky dust.

When he proclaimed his father's name, he charged with a keen sword

that cleaves skulls beneath the helmet's mail.

So he drove a handspan of it into him, and he toppled,

in two halves, one to the right and one to the left.

So he fell, his halves on either side, beneath a most dreadful blow

from the hand of a mighty lion of the lair.
