أَيُوعِدُني إِذا ما غِبتُ عنه

أَيُوعِدُني إِذا ما غِبتُ عنه

وَيَصرِفُ مُهرَهُ والرُمحَ دوني

وَيَصرِفُ مُهرَهُ والرُمحَ دوني

Does he threaten me whenever I am absent from him,

Does he promise me when I am absent from him,

Yet turn his colt and spear away from me?

And turn aside my marriage-gift and spear from me,

يَداً ما قد يَدَيتُ إلى حُصَينٍ

يَداً ما قد يَدَيتُ إلى حُصَينٍ

بأمرٍ غيرِ مُنبَترِ اليقينِ

بأمرٍ غيرِ مُنبَترِ اليقينِ

What a favor I bestowed upon Ḥuṣayn,

That never by me shall hand be given

Through a deed whose certainty remains unbroken!

To the meeting halls of the tribe that are not surely known?

رَدَدتُ له مَخاضاً تالياتٍ

رَدَدتُ له مَخاضاً تالياتٍ

نبيلاتِ المَحاجِرِ والعيُونِ

نبيلاتِ المَحاجِرِ والعيُونِ

I returned to him pregnant she-camels, following one another,

I have brought back for him noble, bright-eyed damsels

With large eye sockets and eyes.

Of delicate ankles and tender palms.

وقِدماً كنتَ جاري نصفَ يومٍ

وقِدماً كنتَ جاري نصفَ يومٍ

فَأَبشِر إِنَّ سَهمَكَ في اليمينِ

فَأَبشِر إِنَّ سَهمَكَ في اليمينِ

And long ago you were my neighbor for half a day;

And a foot thou were running the half of a day!

So rejoice: your arrow is in the right hand.

So rejoice, for thy shaft is in the right.
