Did you think me, son of Zalim, easy prey

That a horseman could bring in early in the night?

Men confronted me; I held their lives in my power,

And I returned to Hind, a broad-flanked guardian.

And you know me when battle rages

And fierce warriors flee at the two narrow passes.

Why, then, did you not defend the men, being their shield

With your own life against what they faced, since you are chief,

And stand before the men amid battle's fury,

As a freeborn, noble, seasoned man does?

Have you not seen that I am war's brother and her son,

And that I am a lion, wide-jawed and scowling?
