Did you not see me when the desolate land enclosed me?

I heard a cry that split the heart: 'O Amr,

Rescue us, for we are a band of Madhhij.

We are held for ransom, yet we have no wealth.

We are required, O Amr, to give what we do not have

by Hawazin—see what time has done!'

So I said to my horsemen, 'Wait for me, for I

will hasten to you when dawn breaks.'

And I drove my colt headlong when I found an unguarded moment,

at al-Taff, until it was said, 'The colt has been hamstrung!'

So I rescued Madhhij's captives from Hawazin,

and nothing saved them but composure and patience.

And they all cried, 'Free us from our bonds,

O brother of might! Indeed, one event brings about another.'

And I returned with captives; between their being slain

and my spear-thrusts today there was not even a finger-span:

    Yazid, Amr, al-Huṣayn, and Malik,

and Wahb and Sufyan, and their seventh, Wabr.
