Lo, a war between the clans of Madhḥij

and Amīn, where its noblemen are,

is indeed a war in which an old man chokes on his evening draught,

and women’s anklets show upon their shins.

So I offered my breast to their spears in its defense,

and kept my life safe, for its appointed death was still far off.

And many a mare straining at the rein I left

in al-Ḥaṣḥāṣ’s watercourse, her bridle cast aside.

And many a charging host, swarming like locusts—its swift slaughter

came by spear-thrusts whose wounds clothed it in blood.

I drew near it beneath the battle-dust, and it turned away,

its left flanks thick with arrows.
