By my life, if Qutaybah has settled in a place
By my life, should Qutayba settle in a town,
whose bite on the wealth of those driven there is fierce,
Where the bite of hardship is severe on the wealth of the stricken,
فَلِلَهِso, to God عَيناًan eye أُمَّUmm (mother of) فَرعٍFar‘ وَعَبرَةًand a tear
فَلِلَهِ عَيناً أُمَّ فَرعٍ وَعَبرَةً

then God bless Umm Far‘’s eye and the tear
Then to God belong the eyes of Umm Far' and a tear,
she makes shimmer in her eye or lets overflow!
That she wells up within her eye or sheds profusely.

Ah, would that I knew: shall I ever spend a night
Oh, would that I knew if I shall ever pass a night,
fit for night travel, while the pale camels’ girths slip,
Sound in night-travel, while the white camels' girths shift,

in a trackless, barren wilderness, with the riding camels like
In a desolate wilderness, where the riding beasts resemble,
sandgrouse of the rugged uplands, whose eggs have already become chicks?
Sandgrouse of rugged ground whose eggs have turned to chicks.

And many a short afternoon journey between two tribal camps I made,
And many a close evening journey between two clans I undertook,
riding a restive she-camel, or an unbroken one I was training.
Traversing a difficult path or taming a stubborn mount.
