هاجَ القَنيصُ عَلَيها بَعدَما اِقتَرَبا
A bereaved, middle-aged mother, at home in Duwwar,
My she-camel left me in the middle of spinning wells
The hunter set upon her after drawing near.
The shirt clung to her after we drew near

تَعتادُ مَكراً لُعاعاً نَبتُهُ رُطَبا
She spent the day in Ru'af's hollow, gathered close,
She remained in a kind, compassionate air as embers glowed on her hide
Frequenting tender makr plants, their growth moist,
She is accustomed to sly, slick grass whose growth is moist

Away from a bright-hued one, like a dinar, lying fallen.
With clear colors like gold coins dangling
She had feared no human and had left him with no sickness.
She feared no human nor neglected to roam

She shook her white neck and avoided
The yielding ground and dunes of Sabba's sweet sands.
The painful, tiresome sands of Sabbá

Then an impatient, zealous one set upon her
On a night that slew Sha'ban or Rajab.
On a night when Sha’bân or Rajab was sacrificed

Until the horn of sunrise flashed upon him
Ibn Qurran's hunting hounds; he had spent the night among wild beasts and solitary ones.
He left the son of Qurrân in the night as game and stranger

Her sending ahead almost reached long eras

Calling Yasar, when I had made him swallow anger.
Calling to the left, and I had poured anger onto him

I began to ask what was with his company
Greet the laden camels, for the riding party has departed.
Motivate the carriers as the riding company had gone

Khaulân or Mudhij excitedly aroused for him

I met them with the question, “Do you have news
Of pilgrims from the people of 'Adh? I have a need.
Of those who made the Hajj from the people of ‘Âd? I have cared for them”

They said, “Hurry to us,” and they claimed
That a riding party of theirs had gone ahead and pressed onward.
That a riding company had set out from them and embarked

I found out when she descended that
Indeed, encampments are where wonders gather.
Encampments are of those things that bring wonder

And they had climbed her hilltops the preceding evening

When we took advantage of night's mountains and the din.
When we took advantage of the mountains of night and gloom

Neither willingly, nor by compulsion and force.
Not for your satisfaction nor wrongfully taken

Between al-Habatayn, neither in earnest nor in play.
Between the two encampments, neither serious nor playing
