We saw you both, O two sons of Rabi‘a, fall
We saw you two, O sons of Rabi'ah, lose heart
at war’s bite, though your host was great.
Under war's bite, though your numbers were great.
وصدقتماand you two proved true قولthe words of الفرزدقal-Farazdaq فيكماabout you two
وكذبتماand you two proved false ماwhat كانhad قالsaid جريرJarir
You proved al-Farazdaq’s words about you true,
And you two proved al-Farazdaq's words about you true,
and proved false what Jarir had said.
And proved false what Jarir had said.
فأنfor if أنتماyou two لمhave not تقدعاyou two restrain الخيلthe horses بالقناwith lances

If you two do not check the horsemen with lances,
For if you two have not checked the horses with lances,
then take your place with the Nabataeans wherever they go.
Then go with the Nabataeans wherever they go.

Namir, in its insolence, imposes humiliation upon you both;
Numayr wrongfully subjects you two to humiliation;
tales of them will range through upland and lowland.
News of them will reach the uplands and descend to the lowlands.

فكلso every نميرىNumayri بذاكbecause of that أميرa prince
Namir has gained from you more than its due,
Numayr won from you more than its standing warranted;
so every man of Namir is thereby a prince.
So every Numayri is a prince because of that.

If you boast of what remains from your ancient past,
And if you boast of your bygone greatness,
cities and palaces, too, have been destroyed.
Then cities and palaces have indeed been demolished:

The enemy's catapults struck them and brought down
cities among them, mountain-like, and walls.
Cities among them, mountainlike, and a rampart.

Kings raised them—Kisra and Hormuz,
And the kings built them—Kisra and Hormuz,
and the house of Heraclius—splendid for an age.
And the house of Heraclius, for an age, and Nadir.

Though you revive the glory of old, there has never ceased
But if you rebuild the ancient glory, there has always been
to be among you one blinded by the ravages of war.
Endurance in you amid the ravages of war.

You battered the lions of Syria until they warned one another
You battered the lions of Syria until they warned one another against
against your protected ground, until no wounded one would growl.
Your domain, and until no wounded beast would growl.

How then, on al-Sharif’s outskirts, can there strike you
How then, on the outskirts of al-Sharif, are you assailed
foxes pawing through the pebbles—while I perish?
By foxes scratching through the gravel, and hyraxes?
