Mufaddah said, when she saw my sleeplessness,
When Mufadah saw the peace of Arqi,
while care's specter kept assailing me with passing fits of madness:
And worries started to wear me down,
نهبتyou squandered مالكyour wealth فيamong الأدنينthose nearest آصرةin kinship
وفيand among الأباعدstrangers حتىuntil حفكhemmed you in العدمdestitution
You squandered your wealth on those nearest in kinship,
The angels in the lower heavens robbed me,
and on strangers, until destitution hemmed you in.
And in the farther heavens till nothingness hemmed me in,
فاطلبso ask إليهمof them ترىyou will see ماwhat كنتyou used to منof حسنkindness
تسدىyou bestow إليهمupon them فقدfor indeed باتتhave become لهمtheirs صرمherds of camels
So appeal to them; you will see the kindness you once
So ask them, you'll see I was not beautiful enough
bestowed upon them, for they now possess herds of camels.
To give myself to them, for now I'm shut off from them,

I said: Enough reproach! You have overdone it, my reproacher;
So I said, you've blamed me enough,
neither Hatim nor Harim died of emaciation.
And Hatem didn't die jesting or decrepit.
