I marveled at my planting date-palm pits after

I am amazed that I planted palm trees, after

I had reached seventy—or had nearly done so.

Reaching seventy, I was determined to do

وأدركت ملء الأرض ناساً فأصبحوا

كأهل الديار قوضوا فتحملوا

And I knew people enough to fill the earth; then they became

And I saw the earth filled with people who became

Like camp dwellers who struck their tents and departed.

Like the people of the land, endured and carried on

وما نحن إلا رفقة قد ترحلت

وأخرى تقضي حاجها ثم ترحل

وأخرى تقضي حاجها ثم ترحل

And we are but a company that has departed,

We are nothing but a caravan that moved on

And another that meets its needs, then departs.

And another fulfills its purpose then moves on
