وكم قد رأينا من كهام وجفنه

How many helmets and scabbards we've seen

Keen—and one with a worn scabbard, yet itself new;

Of hardened steel though fresh from the smith!

ومغتمض في العين صدق لقاؤه

And one the eye disdains, yet trustworthy in combat,

And truthful men with downcast eyes

And one that fills the eye, yet is dull.

While rogues and cheats their glances shift!
