أُنبِئتُ قَومي أَتبَعوني مَلامَةً

أُنبِئتُ قَومي أَتبَعوني مَلامَةً

لَعَلَّ مَنايا القَومِ مِمّا أُكَلَّفُ

لَعَلَّ مَنايا القَومِ مِمّا أُكَلَّفُ

I was told my people pursued me with reproach,

I have been told that my people have pursued me with blame.

as though the warriors’ deaths were a task laid upon me.

Perhaps the people's deaths are among the burdens laid upon me.

فَإِن تَكُ أَفراسٌ أُصِبنَ وَفِتيَةٌ

فَإِن تَكُ أَفراسٌ أُصِبنَ وَفِتيَةٌ

فَإِنّي لَجَرّافٌ بِهِنَّ مُجَرَّفُ

فَإِنّي لَجَرّافٌ بِهِنَّ مُجَرَّفُ

If horses have been struck down, and young men too,

So if horses and young men have been struck down,

then through them I am a ravager—and ravaged in turn.

Then I am indeed a ravager with them, myself ravaged.
