For the prized steeds, a dawn departure when we set them galloping,

And a raid that raises the dust in a swirling cloud.

So al-Maznuq never leaves me, bearing

A saddle-pad that conditioning has secured upon his back.

When war's heralds proclaim it, there appear before them

The sons of ʿAmir, driving every trained steed forward.

They wear helmets and ample coats of mail,

Plunging headlong, as though the men were in a cloud of dust.

Time and again they raided ʿAbs at dawn, on the morning of terror,

And they bore Ibn al-Jawn upward along a stepped path.

And the horses swooped down from Wadi al-Dhinab, having already

Tilted their spearheads, red with blood from jugular veins.

If you ask the horses about us at their battle stations,

On the day of al-Mushaqqar, with the champions in turmoil,

They will tell you that I renew the charge among them,

When the lances are shattered on a day of fierce combat.
