متى أنتَ يا وطني مُسعِدي
لقدindeed أفلتَتْslipped away همَّتيmy resolve منfrom يديmy hand
لقد أفلتَتْ همَّتي من يدي
When will you bring me joy, my homeland?
When will you make me happy, my homeland?
My resolve has indeed slipped from my hand.
My aspirations have slipped from my hands.

ولاnor الصبرُpatience إنif أدْعُهُI call upon it يُنجِدِcomes to aid
ولا الصبرُ إن أدْعُهُ يُنجِدِ
I have abandoned you; longing does not draw me to you,
I left you, though yearning does not bring me close to you,
Nor does patience come to my aid if I call upon it.
Nor does patience, if I call upon it, help me.

And I fought the nights in you; whoever
I battled the nights for your sake, and he who
Struggles against his nights grows weary.
Struggles against his nights is exhausted.

As for youth, it has tired of hopes,
As for youth, it wearied of wishes,
And as for time, it has brought no joy.
And as for time, it did not make me happy.

Your country—defend the sanctuary of its glory,
Your lands, so protect their glorious realm,
For if you do not defend it, you will not be praised.
For if you do not protect, you will not be praised.

Do not make light of its honour, for loyalty

Is a sign of the nobility of the devoted one.

May I lose all honor on the day there is need
I missed manliness on the day ransom was wanted
For sacrifice for my country, and I do not offer myself.
For my country, and I could not ransom myself.

If a man dies as a sacrifice for a homeland,
When a man dies ransoming his homeland,
Then he has died a martyr's death.
He has died a martyr's death indeed.

Lofty ruins, desolate and vacant,
Abounding in wastelands and uplands,
With many crumbled pillars and columns.

When birds turn toward it to rest,
When birds took refuge there to rest,
They collapse in exhaustion upon the hard rock.
Their warbling echoed over the barren hills.

Grim in its features; never is dispelled
Gloomy landmarks with no cheerful dawn,
By dawn the darkness of its black night.
Darkness shrouds their nights in blackness.

Empty of its inhabitants, it is no longer their home,
But wanderers, forever scattered.
But a perpetual abode for nomads.

Separation afflicts us though we are neighbours
Across a foaming sea of deep waters.
To the loud-voiced whose outbursts foam.

Ships bearing the like of what lies within our ribs—
Neighbours whose company is like what is in the ribs—
So it is no wonder if they do not cool.
There is no escape unless their heat cools down.

When we approached the land of Lebanon,
Within us the burning anguish of the distraught exile.
Yearning for that distant loved one filled us.

Separation did not frighten us; rather, we wept
We did not pasture there, but we cried
Over a desolate, bare mountain.
Over a desolate, barren mountain.

Time has dressed in its hoary raiment
And now it wears the garment of decay.
And donned the garb of decay.

Looking down upon lifeless dwellings,
Looking out over totally flattened plains.

Leaving only the child in his cradle
And none but the helpless, paralyzed man.
And the helpless old man sitting there.

Quench the thirst of those who come to drink.
Cooled from their raging heat.

Every zealous youth his livelihood.

What we built, my homeland, the burning
Burning pangs in the breast that have not died down.
Sorrows in our breasts have not died down.

The grapevines complained and we complained of desolation,
And whichever you add pain to suffers still more.
But which of them increases in pain?

And patiently enduring your wretched life.
And be patient with their wretched life.

So he turned away to a more distant homeland.
And he turned away to a more distant home!

My God, pray for it and bow down.
