Recover your dignity; do not surrender it all.

Bearing cares is abasement enough for it.

How strange: it shields you in grief, yet you abase it.

Did you mistake it for tears on the day of parting?

Eloquence has been bereaved of a poet who filled minds

with grace, and heart and tongue with wondrous art.

How fitting that your grief should overflow with weeping,

yet I would shield your self-command from faltering and being lost.

Perhaps more eloquent than a distraught mourner's tears

is a heart overflowing with reverence before death.

O sphere of stars, is there among your hosts a star

that has risen upon you in such splendor?

    فأتت فضاءً في عُلاك وسيعا

    The world was too narrow for her, and death set her free;

she came to a vast expanse in your heights.

She rose to the company of eternity, and left

the mortal host abased, for all its pride.

She scatters her rays upon you, as though

they were her glory, spreading ever farther within you.

O soul of Fayyad, look down for a moment,

that I may draw from you a theme for an hour.

Why dwell in bodies, as though they were

images on a tablet, passing swiftly?

Now that you have made yourself a temple of light,

I have left behind the cast-off temple.

You kept it company for fifty years, filling its frame,

so you dwelt in spaciousness and grazed in lush pasture.

It enfolded you in a breast where hopes unfurled

meanings manifold in purpose and aspiration.

You would leap from his eyes as dazzling magic,

flowing as a spring through every limb.

You ruled the character of his heart, and there surged

within it nobility, in principle and deed.

You coursed over his tongue, and his eloquence was

marvels spread abroad, and rare verses preserved in memory.

You dwelt within his hearing and became its fence

against every jarring sound that offends a listener.

You willed his brow unclouded; he was never

seen dismayed, even when Time raged.

You knew him exultant, merrily at play,

or quietly at rest, humble and content.

He gave lavishly and rested his trust in hopes,

and, though in want, shunned begging and feared hunger.

After your own pattern you molded his sensibility,

and made of him a born poet.

O soul, you are a guest among the stars,

while he lies sleeping beneath the dust.

You were none other than his sun—if only he

had emulated, through your miracle, the prophet Joshua!

Fayyad, this is an outpouring that, had it not come forth

as verse, would have flowed as tears and blood.

When you stand beside a man of letters' grave,

you shower him with springtime from the tears you shed.

Alas for you—a brother whose loyalty I praised—

and I found myself bereft of his affection.

We are indeed in a land that endowed our souls

with literary art, to light them there as candles.

    وإذا انطفأنَ فقد خُذِلْنَ جَميعا

    When they glow, they are pierced for a candle's holder;

and when they go out, they are all forsaken.

    وكفى البيانُ لدى الأديبِ شفيعا

    Nothing is left to me but eloquence—here, take it;

eloquence is intercessor enough before a man of letters.
