It walked with time and its generations,

God guards it and tends it.

And the world reads its legends,

    Recorded in its recesses,

Linked in sequence, story by story,

As though the leaves were mouths.

It shaded Fakhr al-Din on the day

Glory and high standing passed from it to him.

How great a lord was Fakhr al-Din!

Glory accompanied him and took him as a brother.

Victory revealed its verses to him,

So he believed the revelation and dictated it.

He dictated it with the sword to his troops,

So his detachments became the messengers.

We rival the East with its history,

And confront the West with its memory.

I swore by the cedar and its history,

From one end of its glory to the other,

And by the lofty mountains around it,

Touching the stars at its heights,

And by the blood shed for its sake,

The noblest in lineage and the purest:

Glory has recorded nothing for its sons

Nobler than what its two sons recorded.

It was said, 'A sacrifice for Lebanon!' Both said, 'Yes—

With the most precious, the dearest, we redeemed it.'

They both died as loyalty asked of them,

And the two undying ones are glory and God.

I stood by the cedar—and how many a scene

Has tormented the heart and saddened it!

I say to the cedar, in whose shade

Lies a grave we dug with our own hands:

    أَلاَ ترى أنَّا دَفَنّاهُ

    'O cedar, shade our glory in the earth;

Do you not see that we have buried it?'

O grave, the two brought comfort

To your resting place amid the desolation of darkness.

Lebanon, the sons of Khazin redeemed you,

And those who redeemed you have no peers.

When we asked glory about their glory,

The cedar and its fragrance told us.
