Could my heart be free of love for you?

And indeed I have known you as lover and beloved.

    ولَها فؤادُك لا يزال مَشُوْقا

    Every virtue loves you, and you love it;

and for it your heart is always yearning.

And I see your qualities captivating by their beauty

one who takes no path toward perfection.

    أتلومُ قلباً بالجمال عَلوقا

    And I see your beauty radiant with purity;

do you blame a heart enamored of beauty?

    فاطلُع بقلبي في سَناكَ شُروقا

    I love you, O full moon of virtues and piety;

so rise within my heart, dawning in your radiance.

I love your lovely traits, and I am not

one enslaved to any love but love for you.

Do not roast my heart in passion for you; rather,

set my heart ablaze in love for you.

You have moistened me with love—no, no, I cannot accept

not seeing myself drowned in devotion to you.

You have intoxicated me with love for you, until I thought myself

drunk, though I had drunk no pure wine.

    أأفاق صبٌّ مِن هوى فأُفيقا

    And if I grow drunk and do not sober up, do not blame me;

has any lovesick lover sobered up from love, that I should sober up?

And indeed I saw a sentence upon your brow,

which the pen of piety had further adorned.

Then I read in it what amounted, in brief, to this:

“This is guidance; whoever follows it is protected.”

How lovely is perfection in you! For it has appeared

as an illusion in others, but real in you.

You resemble Yusuf in chastity; indeed,

the very resemblance has become reality.

So may the joyous feast gladden you, for it has come

gazed upon by the eyes of every delight.

O feast, you are not the feast; rather, our feast is

the one I have come to praise as is his due.

It is not the feast, my lord, that delights us, for

through you alone has joy become our brother.

Yet it is an instrument, like an arrow, for

unless properly guided, it would not strike its target.

O feast day of the prelate Yusuf, endure for us

as a feast whose serenity's fragrance lingers sweetly.

On your day we shoot arrows of fire toward the heights,

so they aim for Mars and Capella.

So you would think they had risen to tell of joy

to heaven's star, so it might become their companion.

And they return, seeking no dwelling there,

and begin scattering pearls and carnelian.

Those are arrows whose bow is our joys,

wont to pass clean through the heart of sorrows.

So rejoice in a feast whose full moon rises from you,

and remain safe, beloved in happiness's gaze.

These tributes of mine have come to you like a graceful maiden,

from whom the fragrance of devotion to you has spread.

    فلذا سلكتُ بها إليكَ طريقا

    I have confirmed that her beauty captivates minds;

so I have journeyed with her along a path to you.

If I did not hold dirhams in my hand,

what could I hope for if I came to the market?

And if people did not know me as a poet,

they would not applaud my poems.

So if I tremble, do not say it is from fear, for

in your essence the secret of intoxication lies deep.

Grape syrup, like wine, is pressed from grapes,

if you wish to ascertain its origin.

And I would be a young man with a free, unfettered heart,

if my heart were free of love for you.

So bind your hope to God, and do not fear,

and keep success your companion throughout your life.
