Morning came alive for us, and evening died.

In the morning I meet you and cast light.

As though God's kindness—glory be to Him—

had moved that veil aside at dawn.

So praise be to God for a blessing

that embraces even the color of a thread of air.

Indeed, sprawling darkness is a deep sea,

deeper than the innermost heart of annihilation.

It swallows the world, for all its vastness,

and erases beauty and folds loveliness away.

Without the generous light, there would be no greening

of the grass beds, nor would water turn blue.

In the stream's winding course there is praise for it,

and in the boughs, acclaim for it.

What is life without light? What is its color?

What is the bloom of ease, the purity of bliss?

O light, shine forth! You are the festival of midmorning,

the festival of the unfettered ray, the festival of the expanse.

O weaver of clouds upon his loom,

Well done! So draw their train along as you wish.

O you who clothe the ears of grain in gold,

bestow this robe upon the grapevine.

Indeed, the grapevines and their clusters

are generous; so pour for them generously.

O light, O comfort of the dwellings, and O

glad tidings of good and gleam of hope!

Yours is the golden gladness that

moved to and fro over the valley in the morning.

Many a ray from you has pierced the darkness,

so darkness rose wounded, and staggered at dawn.

Let darkness weep over its kingdom,

with a scowling face, all around the sky.

Who will bring me, from the turmoil of love,

a burst of light that will never go out?

I drown my beloved in light, and in

the surges of radiance and the flood of splendor.
