فقدfor indeed تعبgrew weary العقدُthe necklace مِمّاof what رأىit saw
I asked God to grant it peace,
I asked God to calm him
For the necklace was weary of what it had seen.
For the necklace was tired of what it saw

وكمand how often قصَّرَfell short العِقدُthe necklace، كمhow often أبطأtarried
A companion to your waist, never wavering,
A companion to your waist that does not bend
And how often the necklace fell short, how it tarried!
How little the necklace lasted, how slow it was

It prolonged its detour over the bosom,
It lingered on the chest with its twisting
And circled two treasures that had been concealed.
And wandered with two buried treasures

It went and came; then, when it found its way,
It went and came, when it found its way
It hung down, yet sought refuge.
It dangled but it insisted

So, lady, pardon me, for the one
So sorry ma’am, for what
Who clung to the bosom did not err.
Clung to the chest did not err

Upon two hills of pleasure and desire,
On the hills of pleasure and desire
It prolonged its stay and relished it,
It prolonged the stay, and took its ease

And drank deeply of the fragrance of ambergris,
And it feared in life to thirst
For fear that in its lifetime it might thirst.

And, where the shirt fell, it drew near
And it came close by the hem of the shirt
The eyes’ delight that glittered.
To the bliss of eyes that glittered
