The servant of the exalted court now

The slave of the High Presence has become

complains of the latest turn in his threadbare plight.

Complaining of the wretchedness of the situation

توقف الجاري فآماله

توقف الجاري فآماله

عاملة ناصبة صاليه

عاملة ناصبة صاليه

The regular stipend has stopped, so his hopes

The servant has stopped, so his hopes

are toiling, weary, and burning.

Are caught up in prayer

وانقطع القوت ومن ينقطع

وانقطع القوت ومن ينقطع

عنه فما حالته حاليه

عنه فما حالته حاليه

And sustenance has ceased; and whoever is cut off

And sustenance is cut off, and he whose sustenance

from it is in no pleasant state.

Is cut off, how wretched is his state!

فشهر ذي القعدة كفت يدي

فشهر ذي القعدة كفت يدي

عن واجبي فيه يد عاليه

عن واجبي فيه يد عاليه

For in the month of Dhu al-Qaʿdah, my hand was held back

So the month of Dhu al-Qa'dah has restrained my hand

from my due for that month by an exalted hand.

From fulfilling its duty in it, an exalted hand

وشهر ذي الحجة قالوا لنا

وشهر ذي الحجة قالوا لنا

ذاك بقايا السنة الخاليه

ذاك بقايا السنة الخاليه

And for the month of Dhu al-Hijjah, they told us:

And they told us about the month of Dhu al-Hijjah

“That belongs to the arrears of the year gone by.”

That is the remnants of the empty year

وأول العام على ما حكوا

وأول العام على ما حكوا

إن صدقوا يؤخذ في الجاليه

إن صدقوا يؤخذ في الجاليه

And the payment at the year's start, according to their account,

And the beginning of the year, as they say

if they spoke truly, is drawn from the poll tax.

If they are truthful, it will be taken during the exile

فابعث بمن ينتف ذقن المنى

فابعث بمن ينتف ذقن المنى

إن لم تكن آمالنا ساليه

إن لم تكن آمالنا ساليه

So send someone to pluck the beard of wishes,

So send the one who will shave the beard of pilgrimage

if our hopes have not yet found solace;

If our hopes are not wasted

أو فتدارك عرضها منعماً

أو فتدارك عرضها منعماً

or graciously rescue their honor

Or make up for her honor generously

by presenting that short poem rhyming in dāl.
