The days have recovered from sickness through your rule,

and the pain that time complained of has vanished.

The nights of the sons of Ruzzīk have passed and ended,

yet praise and blame concerning them have not ceased.

As though their Ṣāliḥ and their reproacher, even for a day,

had never sat or stood at the head of this court.

They stirred it against themselves while it lay still,

and peace may make leaves sprout on the acacia.

We used to think—and some conjecture is a sin—

that theirs was a host that could not be defeated.

So when you swooped like an eagle, they were feared

by whoever had gathered among those vultures.

    وإنما غرقوا في سيلك العرم

    They were no enemy whose flank was humbled;

rather, they drowned in your overwhelming flood.

In magnifying your enemies, I intended nothing but

to magnify your stature; so pardon me and do not blame me.

And if I thanked their nights, out of loyalty

to their covenant, that covenant is not long past.

And if one day I opened my mouth to disparage them,

your generosity would be satisfied only by sealing my mouth.

And God commands kindness, as a favor

from Him, and forbids obscenity in speech.
