Say to al-Mukarram, whose titles are set

Upon his eminence like engraving in stone:

O Kaaba of generosity, had I a hope,

To its door my Hajj and my Umrah would go.

If you have freely resolved upon a journey,

Then may God make that journey's outcome praiseworthy.

Where stands al-Mahalla beside a governor whose station

Among lofty honors is that of light in sight?

I praise him with what keeps his merits

Remembered by the tongue of the keen sword of hard steel.

And my poems will string—and have already done so—

For him a necklace of praise with splendid pearls.

For you, the trust in my affection, Abu Hasan,

Is upheld; so stay if you wish, or journey on.

For I have given you love like your honor: never

Can the days, bearing murk, rise to its purity.
