Listen, tell ʿIzz al-Dīn: may his fortune ever remain

Mighty, while his adversary is abased.

And may he ever be triumphant, with a victorious banner,

Righting the tilt of the days whenever they lean.

A letter came to me from him; as for its lines,

They are a garden; as for its fragrance, it is an east wind.

I could not tell whether between the lines were noble traits

That you had sent, or wine among them.

For it has worn my longings thin, until they left me

Saying—and concealing this burning thirst is betrayal—

Do you think the days will gladden us by bringing us together?

And is there a way for me to the coolness of meeting?

And if the world begrudges bringing us together,

Then the judgment of the Nāṣirī Presence is gracious.
