Your blessings have exceeded all thanks.

ما أنزل الشعر عن الشعرى

Repaying you is beyond my power;

Your rewards are beyond my capability,

How far below Sirius poetry lies!

Poetry cannot reach such lofty heights.

جئت بها بيضاء تجلو الصدا

جئت بها بيضاء تجلو الصدا

كالصبح أهدى للدجى فجرا

كالصبح أهدى للدجى فجرا

You brought it white, scouring away rust,

I came with a bright dawn that dispels the gloom,

Like morning that bestowed dawn on darkness.

Like the morning it brings light to the darkness.

إن قلت كشفت بها غمة

إن قلت كشفت بها غمة

فقل وأسبلت بها سترا

فقل وأسبلت بها سترا

If you say, 'I dispelled distress with it,'

If I say it has lifted sorrow,

Then add, 'And with it I let fall a veil.'

Then say it has clothed me in honor.

مثلك يا عبد الرحيم اهتدى

مثلك يا عبد الرحيم اهتدى

إلى المعالي مسلكاً وعرا

إلى المعالي مسلكاً وعرا

One like you, O Abd al-Rahim, has found his way

You, Abdel Rahim, found the path

To greatness along a rugged path.

To glory, though the way was rough.

ما مطلبي سهل ولكنه

يصغر في همتك الكبرى

يصغر في همتك الكبرى

My request is not easy, but it

My request is simple though to your great spirit,

Shrinks before your mighty resolve.

It may seem small and petty.

ويا أعلى الورى قدرا

ويا أعلى الورى قدرا

O bright of face, and O pure in honor,

O fair of face, O pure of honor,

And O highest of humankind in rank,

O highest of all in rank,

عرفني جودك طعم الغنى

عرفني جودك طعم الغنى

حتى غدا يستطرف الفقرا

حتى غدا يستطرف الفقرا

Your generosity taught me the taste of wealth,

Your kindness has let me taste riches,

Until poverty came to seem a novelty.

That poverty now seems sweet.
