You laid hold of noble deeds and lofty endeavors

with the strongest forearm and the fullest reach.

The Crown of the Caliphate spurned the words of anyone who

neither honors your eminence nor pays it heed.

For which virtue, O Ward, shall I praise

you, among your widely celebrated noble qualities?

Is it for favors free of reproachful reminders—

for how many favors and acts of patronage you have shown me!

Or for the character that, evening and morning, remains

    generous in hardship and plenty?

Or for ambitions in sovereignty that eclipsed

the ambition of Dhu Ru'ayn and al-Kala'?

Or for the crises in which you served the purpose

of a Mashrafi sword in place of the reed pen?

And courage knew for certain that Ward was

the youth most worthy to be called the Brave.

And how often his sword-edges called out to hearts

as they fluttered: 'Easy now; you shall not be frightened.'

A ransom for Abu al-Husam—and I do not exempt

men who have shunned nobility of character.

His virtues exalt him above them,

as firsthand sight is preferred to hearsay.

I see, O Ward, your foe brought low,

and your fortune high and rising.

And your fire, in the gloom of every crisis

and noble undertaking, blazes on the heights.

So for the unwary and the proud it yields

a firebrand for hospitality or combat.

By the honor of your eminence—for it is too great in my eyes,

when I swear by it, for deceitful flattery—

I have indeed loved praising you, not for anything

that bears on my own harm or benefit,

but because, in the heights of honor, you have fashioned

    virtues never sullied by fabrication.

May God watch over you, noble-born king,

for you are the finest shepherd of noble deeds.

When your steeds and riding camels set forth,

oh, how hearts tremble at your resolve to depart!

And whoever among us is not stricken by your departure

    is counted among worthless castoffs.

And the hardest of Time's calamities, to me,

is the heartbreak of parting after coming together,

especially parting from a proud nobleman, whose

counsel's scorpions were choking torments to vipers.

He defends the realm of Abu Shuja'

when capable men hold back from defense.

Bidding your exalted cavalcade farewell has called me

    to condemn separation and farewell.

You saved a people's lands from ruin,

and your departure has cast us into ruin.

Our souls will lose a life in you,

and the loss of life is beyond endurance.

So may your keen-edged resolves never cease

to govern Time by a command obeyed.
